The Mechanics

How ShiftRosterPay Works

Three inputs, one live dashboard. Here's exactly what happens between picking your rotation and seeing your gross pay.

Step 1
Select Shift Pattern

Choose from Pitman, DuPont, 4-on/4-off, 3x12, 24/48, 8-hour rotating, or 4x10 — then set your cycle start date. The calendar builds itself from there.

Step 2
Input Pay & Rules

Base wage, night and weekend differentials, overtime multiplier, unpaid break minutes, your FLSA overtime rule, and pay cycle — every field feeds the math directly.

Step 3
Get Instant Shift & Calendar Breakdown

Gross pay, a five-category breakdown, key metrics, and an editable calendar update live — no submit button, no waiting.

How overtime is actually calculated

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime is calculated per workweek — a fixed, recurring 7-day period — never averaged across a full pay cycle. ShiftRosterPay splits whatever period you're viewing (monthly or bi-weekly) into Sunday–Saturday workweeks, applies the 40-hour threshold to each one individually, and sums the total overtime for the period.

RuleThresholdTypically used by
Standard FLSA40 hours per 7-day workweekMost hourly, non-exempt employees
7(k) ExemptionUp to 212 hours per 28-day work period (prorated to your period length)Fire, EMS, and law enforcement on 24-hour tours
Note: Some states add daily overtime rules beyond the federal baseline (for example, hours worked past 8 in a single day). ShiftRosterPay models the federal standard; check your state labor department if daily overtime may apply to you.

How differentials stack

Night and weekend differentials apply as a percentage of your base wage to every qualifying hour you work — including hours that are also overtime. Holiday hours, marked manually on the calendar, earn a separate time-and-a-half premium that can stack with night or weekend differential on the same shift.

Night differential

Applies to every hour on a shift coded "Night," plus roughly half of any 24-hour tour.

Weekend differential

Applies to every paid hour on a shift scheduled for a Saturday or Sunday.

Holiday premium

A separate 1.5× premium applied to any day you mark "Holiday" on the calendar.

Editing your calendar

Click any date to cycle it between Day, Night, 24-Hour, Holiday, Forced OT, and Off — useful for modeling a shift swap, a mandated hold-over, or a holiday closure. Edited days get a small white dot so you can always tell what's auto-generated versus manually set. Use Reset Calendar Edits to discard all changes and return to the pure pattern.
